Not so swimmingly
Today, I went swimming for the first time in years. It was great but not without it's drawbacks. For a start I discovered that I'm not as fit as I was five years ago. Don't get me wrong I was never an Olympic swimmer, not even close, and I was inept at all styles but the breaststroke. Today I discovered my breaststroke is rather inept too. I have a gammy knee you see, I slipped, slightly, while dancing at my daughter's wedding last year, and it's never been the same since. Now, while swimming the breaststroke I look like a lame frog. No matter how I tried to get a rhythm going my poor leg kept going askew. The lifeguard was goggle eyed watching me. I think he had me singled me out as the one most likely to drown. My Irish Mother's description of how I sometimes walked as a young girl, kept coming to mind. 'Ah,' she'd say, 'she has lazy leg', which of course I hadn't. Anyway, I persevered slowly, for about ten laps of the pool, so shameful, with others overtaking, and even lapping me, (the show offs) Personally I think they need to look up the meaning of 'casual lane swimming' these ladies were cutting through the water like missiles. I like to think I brightened up their morning with my Phoebe style swimming. Have you seen the episode of Friends the one with Rachel and Phoebe running around the park? If you have then you can imagine my totally shambolic swimming. I mean some ladies were gliding up and down the lanes with no effort at all, while I floundered around like a breathless whale. Even so I thoroughly enjoyed it, and felt on top of the world afterwards. After all, God loves a trier which was (another of my Mother's favourite sayings) so, here's to Friday! Wish me luck!
